Mount Vesuvius is located in southern Italy, in the Campania region. It is situated on the Bay of Naples, about 9 km east of the city of Naples, and overlooks the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The mountain is part of a larger volcanic complex, called the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex. The volcano is about 1,281 meters tall and its last eruption was in 1944. Mount Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous active volcanoes in the world, due to its proximity to densely populated areas. Its most famous eruption occurred in 79 AD, burying the ancient city of Pompeii under layers of ash and pumice. Today, the volcano is closely monitored by scientists and is a popular tourist attraction in the region.
